Eyam Plague Commemoration Service

Sunday 26th August 2007

On the last Sunday in August each year a procession leaves the church and walks to Cucklet Delph, here they hold a service of thanksgiving.

During the Plague, amongst other things, it was decided the church should be closed and communal worship be carried out in the open. The villages could gather together without being so close that they could pass on the illness. This day also marks the death
of Mompesson's wife and tradition dictates that the wife of the Rector on that day should lay a wreath of red roses on her tomb.
There are not many photos because I joined in the service. Sorry to those in earring distance.
