How a Lock works

I apologise for my first attempt at using Flash, it can only get better.

The gates are held closed by the pressure of water behind them. The lock is filled or drained by opening paddles
The paddles release water into or out of the lock and are operated by a handle that fits on a linkage at the top of the lock.
When the water is level at either side of a gate the pressure is equal and the gate can be opened easily.
It takes about 15 minutes to get through a lock in real time.
